Ess

A month passed and there were days it seemed like time flew by too fast. Others, it was like I’d been there forever and my time in Abyssus would never end.

Like that day. I sat in the inner chambers of the Consolatus with the Seven.

Discussing, debating, arguing.

"So once every so often we meet with the representatives of the supernatural and demon world? This means we rule the whole of Abyssus, correct?"

"Correct," Keir answered abruptly. That's how he always was with me now, abrupt and just a little aloof. Unfeeling and cold.

He could be charming, I'd seen it at some point, but since I'd gotten much closer with Vice and Claiborne, it was like he'd decided to pull away, and nothing I said or did could get him to open back up.

"I think the important thing to do at this point is to bring order to Abyssus again. While we are demons, we still have rules and laws in place for a reason." Vice laid a hand flat on the table, fingers drumming against the stone top lightly.

"We could just punish them all. Punish them for not obeying just because the Seven wasn't whole. Now that it is, we still have pockets who complain, but those who turned the moment we were complete need to remember their place." Urion grinned at the table, fangs out and claws protracted.

"Heaven rain virtue on us, Urion, you've too violent a mind. You tire me out," Niran interjected, surprisingly alert and with both eyes wide open. I wondered how much the effort took out of him.

"Maybe we can talk to them first," I suggested, although the memory of the demon who had confronted me when I had been with Teagan and Nuallan haunted me. Demons didn’t seem to be the kind to talk first, punch later. But, having lived through several wars, I was not keen to see any more of it. The bloodshed and the tears still haunted me on some days. "I doubt that killing them would make them actually follow us."

"Darling, you haven't been with us long, but demons respond well to violence." Keir laughed, but I got the feeling that he was laughing at me and in a rather insulting fashion. “Being that we are, I don’t know, demons? Do keep up.”

The way he sounded had my hackles rising. "Don't call me darling in that condescending tone. It might be hard for you to understand, but I'm not a child. It’s barely been two months since you lot dragged me here, but what I see, plainly, are a bunch of idiots who have no imagination beyond punch, kick and kill and that's just because that's how daddy used to do it.”

Keir’s color rose at the word daddy, but I plowed on, “I'm not suggesting that we line up and offer them all free hugs because that would be an idiotic thing to do. But it might be important to ask and learn what they’re afraid of, why they are causing uncontrolled, unexpected chaos in the first place.
